Knowing solar system

Our solar system is one of the billions of solar systems in the galaxy. Our solar system has a sun, 8 planets, 5 dwarf planets, 200+ moons, and thousands of millions of comets, asteroids and meteoroids. According to NASA, it is 4.6 billion years old and moving at a speed of 200 km per second.

Sun

At the center of our solar system is the sun. A Yellow (or Orange) looking star is actually White in color. We may think that the Sun, is a fire with a surface, but it is actually gas, made of Hydrogen and Helium. It has a temperature of 5505 degrees Celsius.

About 99.8 percent of the total weight of our solar system is of the sun.

Moons

Two of the many other names of the moon are natural satellite and lunar. Moons do not have an atmosphere, except Titan which has a dense atmosphere.

Two of the largest moons in our system are Ganymede and Titan. Ganymede is the largest and it orbits around Jupiter, and Titan orbits around Saturn. Saturn has 82 moons, which is the highest number of moons around a planet. Jupiter has 79 moons which is the second highest.

Planets

Saturn is the second largest planet and Jupiter is the largest planet in our system. Saturn is cool whereas Jupiter is hot, made of gas like the Sun. Saturn has a ring of asteroids around it and Jupiter has liquid, the largest ocean in our solar system. Saturn and Jupiter conjunction takes place every 20 years, most recent conjunction was in 2020.

Dwarf planets

The dwarf planets are similar to regular planets, except they do not have clear orbiting paths and atmospheres. They do not have an atmosphere because they are very far away from the sun, as a result, their atmosphere freezes and collapses.

There are many unknown dwarf planets in our system, but 5 have been identified, their names are Pluto, Makemake, Ceres, Eris and Haumea.

Comets, asteroids and meteoroids

Comets are the snowballs made of gas and dust. Comets are mostly located in the outer part of our solar system. Asteroids are like dwarf planets, they are leftovers of the planets. Most asteroids can be found between Mars and Jupiter, in the asteroid belt. Meteoroids are also known as Meteors or Meteorites. Meteoroids are small rocks made of metal, smaller than the asteroids.
